Welcome to Koh Chang, the elephant island.

Koh ChangKoh Chang is the second largest island of Thailand after Phuket. It is located near the Cambodian border, in the province of Trat, about 300 kilometers South-East of Bangkok.

Since 1982, Koh Chang and its 46 neighbour islands have been integrated to the Mu Ko Chang National Park, covering a total area of 650 squared kilometers. The island is 30 kilometers from North to South, and 17 kilometers from East to West.

Koh Chang was first discovered by tourists, only in 1987, but since then, its facilities never ceased to improve and more and more high grade accommodation have appeared all these last years, until today where it is easyer to find high a grade hotel than the standard small bungalows from before.

Koh ChangIts proximity to Bangkok and Pattaya made Koh Chang a more and more popular destination, as much among foreign tourists as among thai tourists, who come many here for week-end and holidays and are representing now almost two third of the total of tourists coming to Koh Chang.

If the majority of the 5000 inhabitants are still living from the coconut harvest, rubber production and shrimp farms, more and more are working now in the florishing tourism industry.

You will also find many other small islands around Koh Chang, like Ko Mak and Ko Kood (or Koh Kut) where you will be able to spend a really pleasant stay.

Is is important to notice that due to its success among thai toursits, Koh Chang and the surrounding islands are literally stormed during special days and local holidays like during the chinese new year or the Thai new year (Songkran). Tt is imperative that you book your room in advance during these highly crowded periods.

Koh Chang and its stunning beaches.

White sand beach - Koh ChangBeaches in Koh Chang are very popular among travellers, and they are more and more evey year to come here and enjoy its peaceful life.

White Sand beach, whose real thai name is Haad Sai Khao, is the main beach of Koh Chang, located North-West of the island, it is a splendid 2.5 km long white sand beach (as you can expect from its name). Developed since more than 15 years, this beach offers a wide choice of hotels, resorts and restaurant lining it, but it has, nevertheless, still kept its calm and pleasant atmosphere. The neighbour village is the main town of Koh Chang and you will find all the classic restaurants (Thai and European), bars, supermarkets and shops.

Khlong Prao beach - Koh ChangKhlong Prao beach is located just south of White sand beach. It is actually a group of three beaches, separated by rivers, making a long stretch of beach of 4 kilometers long. Here again you will find all standard facilities, hotels, restaurants, shops in the village or straight on the beach.

Kai Bae beach - Koh ChangKai Bae beach is south of Khlong Prao beach, it is a stunning white sand beach of 2.5 kilometers. It offers similar facilities as other beaches.

Lonely beach is a superb 1 km long white sand beach, located south of Kai Bae beach. It is a favorite among travellers, as it remained without electricity and mobile metwork for a long time, making a remote beach where it felt good to play the Robinsons. Nowadays, all the beach has electricity but it still keeps its notoriety of quietness.

Ao Bang Bao is at the deep South-West of Koh Chang, it is a large bay of 1 kilometer long and wide and a popular beach for its picturesque quality, with its fishermen houses built on stilts, its small pier and famous seafood restaurants.

Activities around Koh Chang

Wat Khlong Prao - Koh changKoh Chang hosts nice temples and many waterfalls which will make pleasant excursions. But, as Koh Chang is also part of a National Park, you will mostly enjoy marvelous boat trips to explore the neighbour islands and the wonderful underwaters of the area.

Wat Khlong Prao is located straight in the village of the same name, in thai traditonal architecture, you will see nice wall paintings in addition to the superb statues of the Buddha.

There are also many other interesting temples in Koh Chang, like Wat Bang Bao aside the road before the village of Bang Bao, Wat Khlong Son, 500 m before the village of same name and Wat Khlong Nonsi. Up a hill before the village of Khlong Son, is a charming small chinese temple, typical and very colorful, which will make a nice picture.

Plongee - Koh changKoh Chang also offers many waterfalls you can easilly reach by tracks through the jungle, another pleasant excursion. Klong Plu waterfalls are the highest waterfalls of Koh Chang, with a 20 meters high wall and many clear water pools aound it, awaiting to refresh you. Than Mayom waterfalls are made of 3 different levels of waterfalls and also offer many pools around to swim in. Khiri Phet waterfalls are made of 12 different levels with a nice pool below to swim in, after the treck to reach it.

Koh Mak - Koh chang National ParkMu Koh Chang National Park remains, of course, the main attraction of Koh Chang, with its stunning underwaters and all the small islands and islets, scattered on the splendid sea. Many diving schools and travel agencies in Koh Chang offer boat tours to discover the splendour of the area and practice scuba diving and snorkelling in its limpid water to observe its marvel of colourful fishes and corals, like around Koh Mak or Koh Kood (Koh Kut), for example, where you will even be able to remain for a few day pleasant stay and enjoy their modern facilities, just by the beach.
